Virtual Technology Review

Virtual technology is a brand new area of research with many applications and domains. VR is not without its limitations and obstacles that must be overcome in order to grow and become more mature. VR is not available due to its price and the hardware that goes with it. Additionally, it has technical issues, such as the lack of standardization.

VR provides a means to learn by experiencing situations which are dangerous or difficult in real life. For instance fears of flight or exposure to a distressing situation. This is especially helpful in mental health treatments such as PTSD. VR can help patients face these challenges in a safe and secure manner.

VR can also enhance professional training, allowing athletes to practice their abilities without the need to travel to specific training facilities. This can be especially helpful in developing perceptual-cognitive abilities such as motor and spatial abilities.

There is a great deal of work to be accomplished in the areas of theory, methodology and pedagogical practice. In particular there is a need to define how the diverse technology and immersive features of VR affect learning outcomes in different professional training contexts. A comprehensive review of the literature on this subject could help inform strategic resource allocation by identifying which VR features are critical to different types of skill-training.
